Greens Aerification Tuesday April 18th
This coming Tuesday, April 18th, we will be doing deep tine aerification on our greens. We frequently get asked about the aerification process and why it is necessary and what it entails, so we are going talk about some of those questions right here.
1. Why do you have to aerify greens? We aerify to improve the drainage characteristics of our greens by creating more subsurface pore space. Aerification also dilutes thatch and organic matter in the canopy of turf for an overall firmer and smoother putting surface.
2. What is deep tine aerification? This is the process of poking an 10" long tine (1/2" in diameter) down into the soil to break up the pan of soil that exists below the surface. There is no core pulled out in this process which allows the greens to remain smooth and putt very true almost immediately following the process. We space the tine further apart than in "core" aerification so this process actually effects putting less than traditional aerification.
I know that when we as golfers hear aerification we shudder at the thought of playing after this process, however as you can see it is good for our greens. If this process is done properly, golf can be played with little to no negative effects on putting. We have done this deep tine aerification in the past and the greens actually come out of it firmer and faster than they were before we started. Don't fear aerification, embrace it, because it means that we are setting our greens up to be really good in the days that follow!
